Even though I didn’t perform as well as I had hoped, it’s pretty cool to see my name as the record holder for my weight class!  Glad to get my first meet out of the way!  Now I’ve got to make it look pretty and hang on to that spot!

Running is my meditation

I went on my first run in almost a month this morning.  It had been too long for various reasons but mostly because I badly twisted my right ankle.
I recently noticed stress creeping in over the last few days, maybe weeks. Running somehow allows my mind to clearly think. While running, I do listen to music or a podcast but I always wonder off.
I was able to think about my upcoming promotion, training for my next powerlifting meet, my new business and having lunch with my dad this afternoon.  I was able to take deep breaths and ponder different paths with opposing directions to help guide me in making solid decisions for my life.
This is mediation. A breathing and visualisation process while at peace.

My 1st Powerlifting meet, Home Gym & BHC Boot Camp Updates!

My first powerlifting meet, Texas State Powerlifting Championship, was on Saturday March 29th! wpid-img_20140402_084413.jpgI did….good.  I know I could’ve performed better. I’m glad to get my first meet out of the way.  I know now what to expect.  I decided to try powerlifting in January and have only been training for about 3 months. I met with a powerlifting coach to review my form and get some tips. I ended up meeting with Mitch on more consistent basis.  After 4 weeks of training with him my numbers went up to a point I never imagined I’d hit so soon.  My next meet will be in San Antonio, The Jill Mills Alamo Classic, on June 21st.  This will be a national qualifier and I have no doubt that I will qualify.  Nationals will be in July in Las Vegas!  I’ll post more training videos ASAP!

Texas House of Strength home gym is coming along nicely! wpid-20140403_215722.jpgWall paint is up, trim is about done, we just need to set up the shelves, cubbies, refinish some of the equipment then set it all up! We’re hoping one or two more weeks. I am now booking personal training consultations and reserving spots. Email me to get started!

About Texas House of Strength Boot Camp, I attended the Blockhouse Creek community meeting to discuss the idea of me bringing additional class times to our park.  It was passed along to a sub-committee for review and after 4 weeks of communication, I got the approval!!!  That means Boot Camp will be coming to Tonkawa Park, by the soccer field mid-April or early May 2014!!! Pin Presses, BP, Shoulders, Back & Core

Ahhh….sigh…..what a day! I woke up refreshed after my second night in a row sleeping 8-9hrs. I had an excellent 2hour training session in my garage gym.

This is what I did:
Pin Presses – I warmed up up to my workset which were singles of 130 3 times, just 5lbs shy of my body weight. I hadn’t pressed that much weight before so that’s why I laughed after my first set. To me, the bar went up very, very, very slowly….LOL!

I moved onto bench presses working with 3 different hand placements. I worked with 75lbs and did 3 reps at 3 different hand grips for 3 sets. This was really cool, I’ll probably add a little more weight next time.

Next were Bent-Over Rows. I did 5 sets of 3 at 120#. Could probably do a little more weight next time or add more reps.

My fourth exercise was the Upright Rows. I had to play with my hand placement because I kept feeling a nerve get pinched during the movement. I need an adjustment, I miss my chiropractor! I did 5 sets of 3 at 75#, could add more reps next time, maybe do a 5×5.

Next I did Lat Pull Downs with a close grip, one of my favorite back exercises! Today I did 5 sets of 3 at 100#.

Lastly, I did a little core. I wanted to go heavy and do just a few reps but I was a little fired up so I kept going. I used a 25# plate on my first set of 25, actually the video showed me I did 24, then I dropped the weight to a 10# plate for the last 2 sets of 25. It was tough on my shoulders, it burned so good.

On another note, I had my time to speak during “citizen communication” time at the Owners Association meeting tonight about proposing they implement an affordable rate for Fitness Instructors to host boot camps in our neighborhood parks. I only got just a few minutes but I did well getting my points across. They at least did not say no, instead they want to have a follow up meeting after discussing this topic amongst themselves…..fingers are crossed!

Squats and Walk Outs video

Today was a happy day for me! I got approval to be off the weekend of the Texas State Powerlifting Championships on March 29th!! I sent off my entry forms and ordered a singlet, ha, never thought I’d ever wear a singlet. So I’m officially working towards an excellent first PL meet!

My gym has been and still is under some minor improvements. I haven’t been able to stick my training schedule as planned for the past week. We’re almost done in the gym so it’s at least usable!

I worked on squats and walk outs today. I decided my work set would be 185/3(3). Set 1 sucked. So many things wrong here. Set 2 was better but I’m seeing what I need to work on. This is why it’s so beneficial to record your lifts!

I totally dig doing walk outs!! The feeling of having that much weight on your shoulders is such a rush! I’ll end with a heavier set next time ;D

New PR, Boot Camps in the park & Gym in Progress!

Allow me to express my excitement about hitting PR’s recently! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with a powerlifting coach last Tuesday. He provided excellent tips on the squat and the deadlift along with suggesting assisted exercises. I was given great information on what to expect on my first meet and talked about gear.

We started with the squat. My knees were drawing in but that was quickly corrected with a wider stance. Other than that, I was going pretty low which I didn’t need to in a competition. I told him that 165# was the highest I’d attempted alone. I knew I could’ve squated more but I wanted to make sure my form was good before adding more weight. I started with 165# and he was like “too easy, let’s go 185#”. Alright, let’s do it, I thought. 185# done. Could do more. 195#…205#, THAT was my number! He spotted and it took me just a few seconds but I did it. He then showed me how to do walk outs. We did a few sets, worked up to 315# I think. On the last set and I was instructed to squat after 10 seconds and walk out from under the bar….scary but I totally get the idea behind working this technique. Last week, 165#….this week, 1RM 205# on the squat!

Next we worked on the deadlift. Adjustment I needed to make was to point my toes forward, place my shins right against the bar and pick up my speed on the lift. 185# was the most I’d done and that was also last week. So we loaded 185# and like the squat, he said it looked too easy. Ha. So we shot up to 205#…all good…215#…good…225#, he looked at me after that lift and was like “wow, so how’s the back feeling?” “Great!” I said. His response was “screw it, let’s go for 250#”. “Alright, let’s do it!” I said. He slapped on his Inzer belt around my waist, asked me to take in my deep breath, he THEN fasted the lever and I went for it. His hand was within reach to grasp the bar in case I needed some support but I did it, slowly but I did it and DAM did it feel amazing! He said I hitched a little so it wouldn’t have counted in a competition but I bet next time I go for it, it’ll be without hitching at all!

My husband has been working so hard on the garage for the past week and a half. Our HOA denied our request to build a shed outside of the 120sqft allowance so plan B is to give him one side of the garage for his woodwork and me the other for gym work. Not too much work is needed but he’s adding extra shelving, bumper plate cubbies, barbell racks and more to the gym side. Some finishing touches like paint and other accessories will then be added and hopefully in the next few weeks Texas House of Strength will be up and running for personal training!

I’m also hoping to run boot camp classes in my neighborhood park BUT the challenge is that the HOA may not allow it. I got put on the agenda to speak about it in the next board committee meeting on Wed Feb 26th. Currently, if I wanted to use the park/pavilion, I’d have to pay $25 each time! Apparently, they’ve never had a request like this so they’d like to learn more about my intentions. I’ve been doing some research in finding out how it works for City parks. I met with the Director of Parks & Recreations for the City of Cedar Park and the City of Leander. The City of Cedar Park asks for 10% of gross revenue per session while the City of Leander asks that you buy a $50 annual permit. Both require liability insurance and that the fitness instructor is CPR certified, no problem! So I’m currently putting a proposal to present to the board in hopes of the HOA adopting a similar program structure. If this granted then I, along with future Fitness Instructors, will be able to offer fun group fitness programs to our neighbors and friends! Our community is very active and I know most would support this proposal…I just may have to keep it within our community.

Powerlift Training – Week of 2/3/14

SONY DSCIf I can get off from work and my training goes well, my first powerlifting meet will be on March 29th! I’m really excited about it and a tad nervous because I’ve never even been to real competition meet. I have an idea of what it might be like from watching YouTube videos and following other lifters.
I’ve been weight training for many years but have only been focusing on the 3 lifts since Dec 2013 and more seriously in Jan 2014. I’m not working with a coach but it helps reading Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength, the newest edition, which provides excellent tips on programming. I hope to also get a few pointers from friends like YOU!

This week my training will go like this:
Monday – Rest Day
Tuesday – Full PL – max efforts
Wednesday – Bench Press 6 sets of 5 at 90%, Bent-Over Rows 6 sets of 5, High Pulls 6 sets of 5, Close-Grip Lat Pulldown 6 sets of 5
Thursday – Squat 6 sets of 5 at 90% – going low, Rack Pulls 6 sets of 5, Back Extension (reverse hyper) 5 sets of 10, Bulgarian Squats 5 sets of 10
Friday – Full PL – max efforts
Saturday – Trail Run (Spartan Race Training)
Sunday – Deadlift 6 sets of 5 at 90%, 3 x 100 Weighted Crunches, 3 x 100 Weighted Leg Lifts, 3 x 100 Weighted Russian Twists

I actually spent quite a bit of time on the DL and ran out of time for some core work. Next time make more time!

Overall, this week was really exciting for me because of my new belt. I’m looking forward to new numbers on the squat next week!
